Two Centuries of Building, One Township
Clinton Township's earliest recorded settlement dates to 1783, when Moravian missionaries established a community along what was then called the Huron River. The Michigan Territorial Legislature renamed both the township and the river for New York governor DeWitt Clinton on July 17, 1824, and the area spent its early decades as a lumbering and farming community, with sawmills and gristmills lining the Clinton River.
